Timber Frames

The craft of timber framing has been in use for thousands of years, but for only a few centuries in North America. Using larger wood members(usually 6-12” wide) spaced further apart than conventional stick-built frames, timber frames are self supporting structures connected with mortise-and-tenon joinery and many smaller diagonal braces(“knees”). When the timber frame is complete, there is usually no metal, only wood, composing the framework.

Timber frame construction has seen a resurgence in popularity in the last several decades thanks to a handful of inspired individuals who resurrected the craft and the market for a very well built and wonderfully creative homes. While the frames of old houses were often concealed within the walls, contemporary timber frames are usually left exposed to celebrate the strength and craftsmanship of the wood framing. The larger framing members often lead to open floor plans and greater flexibility for the design of the building’s interior.
